BEFORE TRAVELLING

If you are thinking of diving in Aqaba then here are some essentials to consider before you go…

  • WeatherWeather
Jordan has a hot dry climate with long, hot summers from April to October and short, cool winters from November to March. Winter can be cold in the desert, but is pleasantly moderate in Aqaba and the Dead Sea where temperatures are warmer. Average temperatures in Aqaba range from 25 to 34ºC in summer (but can reach as high as 40ºC) to 10 to 22ºC in winter. There is low rainfall and you can expect as many as 12 hours of sunshine during the summer months.

  • Aqaba needtoknow flagVISAS
Arrivals at Aqaba, either through the port, the airport or at the crossing from Israel or Saudi Arabia, are granted a free visa to Jordan. There is no obligation associated with this visa, provided that they leave the country from the same border and within one month of arrival, and that they do not need to renew their visa. Otherwise, you can buy a single entry visas valid for two months cost 40 JOD (approximately £36) at any port of entry, except the King Hussein Bridge at the Jordan/Israel border. Groups of five persons or more arriving through a designated Jordanian tour operator with a government certified tour guide are exempt from all visa charges, provided the group arrives and departs together as well as stay a minimum of three nights in Jordan. Certain nationalities require an entry visa to be obtained prior to travel, see www.aqaba.jo for a full list.
  • PhonePhones
Local SIM cards which can be bought on arrival can be used in most open line phones. Telephone services within Jordan are efficient and reliable. Internet access is widespread via Internet cafes and hotels. Dial 0 before area codes when calling to and from a mobile or landline outside of that region. Important codes to remember: country code is 962; international dialling code is 00. Emergency numbers: dial 199 for medical attention or the fire service; dial 191 if you are getting pick-pocketed, robbed or harassed in any way.

The currency in Jordan is the dinar (JD), divided into 1000 fils. The dinar is also divided into 100 piasters (pronounced “pee-asters”). Coins come in denominations of 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 fils, and one dinar. Notes come in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 JD. All commercial banks, exchange booths and most large hotels are authorised to exchange foreign currency. Street money-changers are best avoided. Visa, MasterCard, Diners and American Express cards are widely accepted. ATMs are available in all but the smallest towns.
  • jordan lang 2015-01-05 10-23-09LANGUAGES
The national language of Jordan is Arabic. However, most Jordanians speak English, especially in tourist areas such as Aqaba. Many Jordanians also speak French and German.
  • HealthHealth
Visitors to Aqaba and Jordan generally are unlikely to require immunisation jabs. However, consult with your doctor as immunisation against typhoid, polio and hepatitis A should be considered for long-stay travellers and those visiting areas of poor sanitation. Yellow fever vaccination is required for travellers arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. Medical services are excellent in Jordan and most doctors are bilingual in Arabic and English. Larger hotels have a doctor on call and embassies can also suggest doctors and hospitals. Aqaba has decompression chamber, just 25 minutes by road from the furthest dive site.

  • aqaba taxiTransport
Most visitors flying to Jordan will travel to one of the two international airports. Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), located 20 miles south of Amman, is the main airport in Jordan and is serviced by many global airline carriers. Visitors heading for Aqaba are more likely to arrive at King Hussein International Airport (KHIA), which is approximately a 45-minute flight from Amman’s airport and is serviced by national and international carriers. Taxis are inexpensive even over substantial distances, such as the trip between Amman and Aqaba. Private taxis in Aqaba are painted green; they can be taken from ranks outside larger hotels, or hailed in the street. Taxis have meters, but it is advisable to agree on the cost beforehand. Several companies offer charter bus and regular tours in modern, air-conditioned coaches and you can explore the city of Aqaba via sightseeing bus.
