Vampire Squids and Beasts of the Deep

A US ocean research team has released fascinating footage of their latest expedition to the Gulf of Mexico

The Nautilus Live expedition, headed and founded by deep sea explorer Robert Ballard in 2008, aims to explore uncharted areas of the ocean floor. Educators, students and the public can watch a high-definitition live stream from aboard the Nautilus and have access to a vast amount of resources on the expedition website

This year's focus is on the unexplored US territories in the Caribbean and Pacific. Over a five-month period the science team will examine the biological impact of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, investigate several shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico and explore the Mesoamerican Reef.

The team recently completetd the ECOGIG (Ecosystem Impacts of Oil and Gas Inputs into the Gulf of Mexico) leg of the expedition and encountered some of the most fascinating marine creatures.

VAMPIRE SQUID ENCOUNTER

Early last week the research vessel successfully identified an unknown target as the wreck of the USS Peterson (DD-969), a Spruance-class destroyer which was sunk in 2004 by the U.S. Navy. The shipwreck sits at a depth of about 2,400 meters and was unseen since its sinking until the re-discovery by the team on 7 July. You can watch some of the highlights below.
