Call For Greater Protection of UK Seas

NGOs call on MPs to sign a Marine Charter and commit to protecting UK seas

The UK’s Marine & Coastal Access Act 2009 whose highlights included enabling the creation of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZ) in the UK and its offshore waters, marked its fifth anniversary on 12 November. There are currently 27 MCZs in England, with two more tranches planned in the next three years. Although the UK made headway in the last five years, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Some 19 organisations have united and created a Marine Charter to ensure that ‘a commitment to complete the delivery of a representative and well-managed ecologically coherent network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in UK seas is enshrined within party political manifestos’ ahead of general elections in 2015. So far over 120 MPS and 20 peers have signed the Charter.
