Species Battle: Turtle vs Tiger Shark

PRETOMA founder and president Randall Arouz chanced upon a turtle that successfully avoids becoming a tiger shark’s next meal

The turtle in this video taken in the Cocos Islands plays two tricks on a tiger shark. Not only does it turn sideways, using its shell as a shield so the shark can’t simply bite into its body (‘like a cookie’, says Arouz), it also swims in tight circles so that the shark can’t make sharp enough turns to catch it.

‘The tiger shark doesn’t always win,’ says Arouz in an interview with Cater News. ‘Turtles also have strategies to avoid getting eaten.’
