Sperm Whale Encounter At 600m

Scientists exploring the Gulf of Mexico with a ROV recorded a spectacular encounter with a sperm whate at a depth of 598 metres (1,962 ft) off the coast of Louisiana

The team around oceanographer Robert Ballard set out aboard the E/V Nautilus to explore the Gulf's methane seeps and map the Galapagos Rift and were surpised by the whale on Wednesday.

The sperm whale circled the ROV (remotely operated vehicle) several times allowing the team to record the animal's curious animal approach.
