Seal Surfs on Back of Humpback Whale
An Australian photographer has captured a fur seal catching a ride on the back of a humpback whale off the New South Wales coast
Robyn Malcolm was photographing a humpback whale feeding frenzy near Eden, 500km south of Sydney, and said she only came across the lucky shot later.
'We'd seen some amazing whales coming out of the water, everything was happening so quickly. And it was when I went back through the photos that I realised I had actually captured the seal on top of the whale,' she told the Sydney Morning Herald.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife whale expert Geoff Ross said he had heard of only one other similar incident.
'The only other time was a seal trying to get away from a killer whale... the seal hopped on the back of the pectoral fins of a humpback whale,' he told the newspaper.
It has been suggested that the photo has been manipulated but Ms Malcolm brushed off the allegations.
'I'm positive, because I don't know how to use PhotoShop. And I do still have it on the camera so I can prove it.'
