Fisherman Catches Giant Wolffish

A fisherman in Japan has caught what is believed to be one of the largest wolffish ever landed

Hirasaka Hiroshi was fishing in Hokkaido when he brought the prehistoric-looking creature, which measures some six feet, to the surface.

‘It was worth flying to [Hokkaido] twice within three months. This guy is super cool,’ posted Hiroshi on his Twitter account.

The catch was unusual in that the wolffish usually measure half the size of the fisherman’s catch and rarely venture into shallow water, preferring the depths of the Atlantic and Pacific.

Rising water temperatures has been postulated by scientists as a reason for why wolffish are venturing further north, and it has been suggested that the size of the fish could be connected to fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
