Yao Ming Aids Decline in Shark Fin Shoup
Shark finning in China plummets after Chinese basketball star Yao Ming lends his support to campaign groups
In a remarkable tale that reveals the power of celebrity, former basketball player Yao Ming has been credited with a 50-70 per cent reduction in shark fin harvesting and recent studies have shown that 91 per cent of Chinese citizens now support a ban on shark fin soup.
Surveys showed that 75 per cent of Chinese were unaware that shark fin soup came from sharks (the dish is called ‘fish wing soup’ in Mandarin), while 19 per cent believed the fins grew back, and few understood the impact on shark populations.
Chinese star Yao Ming who became eight-time NBA All-Star has been working with conservation charity WildAid for several years and has now turned his attention to the poaching of ivory in Africa.
