Video: meet the mantas of Komodo

Seeing a manta for the first time can be a hard experience to explain.

You may have seen video footage or amazing photographs of these majestic animals, but the first time you see one with your own eyes and share the water with them, is a memory that lasts a lifetime.

The slow movement, the relaxed gliding motion, the tiny eyes, the playful swoops and loops (if you are lucky) and the anticipation of ‘are they coming back?’.

Some mantas can be shy, swim past and never return, some ‘fly’ in large circles, passing by just a little bit closer to you over time, and some are used to divers and enjoy the feeling of the bubbles on their stomachs. So you can have pretty close and amazing experiences with mantas if you remain calm, don’t swim directly at them (like every animal under the sea) otherwise, they will probably leave.

This video is the first episode of ‘Bluetiful’, a series of short movies created by Fisheye Underwater Productions. This first episode, ‘Manta Moments’ is celebrating that feeling of being in the presence of the manta ray. Filmed in Komodo, it was captured over 15 days of diving all around the national park.
