Reports of Unexplained Dolphin Deaths Along Cornish Coast

Conservationists are concerned about the high number of dead dolphins being found on Cornish beaches.

The bodies of as many as 13 dolphins this year have been found washed ashore at beaches along the Cornish coast - a dramatic increase in such findings from an already alarming number washed ashore in previous years.

Theories as to the cause of the dolphin deaths remain uncertain, although the post-mortem results from some of the 61 similar cases in 2016 have cited ‘pollution, trawler nets, inclement weather and jet skiers’ as possibilities.

Local conservationists are urging members of the public who discover a stranded dolphin – or large animal of any species – to contact the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The Marine Stranding Network's page can be found at http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/strandings

All information regarding the findings is useful. A spokesman for the Wildlife Trust said: 'Information is vital in helping us to conserve wildlife and cannot be learnt from studying live animals. We can learn about causes of death and threats to survival.'
