Ghost Fishing UK, together with Project Baseline Portland Harbour Wrecks Project, are hosting their 'Winter Warmer Projects Weekend' on 6 - 7 January 2018 at Portland Marina in Dorset.

Ghost Fishing UK is part of the global Ghost Fishing and Ghost Gear Initiative, dedicated to removing and recycling lost 'ghost' fishing gear from the ocean, preserving the wrecks on which it often accumulates, trapping wildlife and presenting a hazard for divers. Project Baseline's Portland Harbour Wrecks Project aims to document and monitor the popular wrecks within the large man-made harbour to establish a baseline understanding of the wrecks, through detailed documentation, as well as continued monitoring of their condition into the future.

Together, they are hosting a weekend of diving, social events and talks around Portland Marina. Representatives from both organisations will be present on four boats. They will explain, demonstrate and offer education on how they run their projects, what divers can do to join in and what skills they need to become part of the teams.

Divers will have lectures, demonstrations and instruction in precision diving techniques, working underwater closely within a team, surveying, visibility measurements, marine life identification, ghost-gear recovery and disposal routes.

The weekend is being organised by Ghost Fishing UK secretary Christine Grosart and Project Baseline Portland Harbour Wrecks managers Jayme Fraioli-Harper and Marcus Rose. Four boats will head out over the two days and conduct four dives. In the evening, there is an open invitation to the public to join the event for a hot buffet and an evening of talks from SeaSearch, Ghost Fishing UK and Project Baseline.

At the end, there will be an open floor panel of representatives to answer questions about the projects. There will also be a raffle and a prize draw in aid of Ghost Fishing UK (registered charity) and this has been generously sponsored by Fourth Element, Halcyon, AfrayedKnot and DIVE Magazine.
