Cornish Chippy Batters the Competition for Sustainable Fishing Award

At the 31st National Fish and Chip Awards, held on 24 January, Penzance-based Fraser's Fish and Chips won the Marine Conservation Society (MCS)-sponsored Good Catch Award.

The Good Catch Award, jointly supported by MCS and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), aims to encourage sustainable sourcing in the fish and chip shop industry so that diners can eat fish from fisheries where stocks aren’t under threat from overfishing.

Rajina Gurung, MCS Seafood Sustainability Advocate and Good Catch judge, said she was really impressed with all of the finalists for this year's award: 'The standard of entries this year was exceptional, however, Fraser's went the extra mile to demonstrate their commitments to sourcing seafood responsibly. They really utilised the available resources like the MCS Good Fish Guide and Cornwall Good Seafood Guide to learn about the seafood they’re selling which was fantastic to see. We were very impressed with how good an understanding they have of sourcing local sustainable seafood and they do a great job of communicating this to their customers and the wider public. They have set a great example of what can be achieved when businesses put sustainability at the heart of what they do. Well done!'

Frasers owners, Pete and Sue Fraser, who also own the award-winning Harbour Lights chippie in Falmouth, say they only sell wild-capture and farmed fish from sustainable and responsibly managed fisheries.

According to their website, they base their decision on whether a particular fish species is from a sustainable source by using the MCS Good Fish Guide and for local, Cornish fish, the Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Good Seafood Guide, which is underpinned by the MCS ratings methodology. Frasers say they make every attempt to source fish from fisheries with a rating of 1 to 3 and are continuously committed to lowering the average rating of the fish they serve.

MCS seafood ratings are generated by assessing the relative health of each fish stock, and the sustainability of the various fishing or fish farming methods used. A red rating of 5 (Fish to Avoid) is given to those fish that MCS recommends be avoided because they are overfished; a green rating of 1 or 2 (Best Choice) is awarded to the most sustainably harvested seafood including fish from certified fisheries and farms.

The National Fish and Chip Awards are organised by seafood authority, Seafish, The authority was founded in 1981 by an act of parliament to support the UK seafood industry for a sustainable, profitable future.
