Tioman Dive Centre Wins Prestigious Green Fins Award
The award recognises TDC as the Green Fins member with the lowest environmental impact, and was presented as part of the ADEX BlueGreen360 Awards. The winner is chosen based on a rigorous assessment of business practices across the 500-strong network of Green Fins members, which have also undertaken Green Fins sustainability training. Based on this assessment, Tioman Dive Centre was determined to be the business with the lowest overall environmental impact.
As a Green Fins member since 2009, TDC has undertaken a number of proactive steps to minimise its environmental footprint on both the local environment and the coral reefs, including:
- Changing to environmentally-friendly cleaning products
- Educating staff about the benefits of protecting the environment
- Use of Green Fins training materials during staff induction
- Removing dead coral from shop display
- Encouraging staff to use reusable containers and bags for food and shopping
- Correcting poor behaviour by guests with post-dive explanation
- Logging data from clean-up efforts
- Replacing boat’s 2-stroke engines with 4-stroke engines.
- Direct communication with guests regarding environmental responsibilities
'We’re so delighted to have won the Green Fins award,' said Rosie Cotton, Owner and General Manager of Tioman Dive Centre. 'We’ve been working hard to try to instil in our staff a desire to protect the environment, both above and underwater. As soon as the staff truly believe in this, becoming a Green Fins dive centre becomes easy.'
TDC's staff are encouraged to come up with new ideas in order to improve the dive centre's Green Fins rating, and communicate environmentally sound diving practices directly to customers, rather than rely on posters displayed around the building. As well as reducing the environmental impact of the dive centre, TDC has also seen a rise in business as a result of its efforts.
'Since becoming a Green Fins member, we have seen a significant increase in numbers of divers,' said Rosie. 'We are able to show customers that we are taking an environmentally friendly approach to their dive experience and, at this point in time, I do believe many customers will actively search for a dive company who does not just provide an enjoyable dive but also shows a responsibility towards, and a passion for, the environment.'
Chloe Harvey, Director at The Reef-World Foundation, said: 'We’d like to congratulate Tioman Dive Centre on being the most environmentally friendly of all the Green Fins dive operators and thank you for all your hard work to achieve this amazing result. We do our best to support Green Fins members in their efforts to reduce their environmental impact by providing training, posters, information and guides and we’re delighted to see how pro-actively they have taken on board this information.'
