Werner Lau Dive Centre Closes
The Werner Lau dive centre in Sharm El Sheikh has closed permanently after 15 years of operation
In a statement released at the end of December 2016, Werner Lau announced the closure of the popular dive centre.
'We are really sorry to inform you that we will give up our diving centre in Sharm El Sheikh on 31 December 2015. It was not an easy decision, but due to the recurring problems in this part of the Red Sea, this step was inevitable,' says Werner Lau.
The area has experienced economical and political turmoil in the last three years, leaving local businesses struggling for survival as tourist numbers dropped by 85 per cent within just a year.
After a bomb onboard a Russian airplane killed all 224 passengers in October last year, most European flights to Sharm were discontinued until further notice.
'During the past 15 years, Sharm El Sheikh has become a second home for us,' the statement reads. 'We had opened the diving centre there to offer our clients an alternative destination to the Maldives and poured a lot of dedication in its development and operation. Unfortunately, it is over now.'
The Werner Lau centre 'The Oasis' in Marsa Alam remains open and direct flights are available from several European hubs.
