Review:  guide to the world's best wildlife dives

Hammerhead Bimini Bahamas shark fish diver dive sites

Anyone approaching the task of assembling a book entitled World's Best Wildlife Dive Sites would (following a shriek of delight at the prospect of doing all this diving) understandably take a sharp intake of breath at the scale of such a project. However, husband-and-wife team Nick and Caroline Robertson-Brown have the benefit of more than 20 years diving together, award-winning careers in photo journalism and respectively a BSc in Environmental Biology and MSc in Animal Behaviour, so if anyone is qualified to take it on, why not them?

Of course, no book could comprehensively cover such a subject, instead this book seeks to give a flavour of what's best from all around the world by picking out 32 sites that cover Africa, Europe, Asia, Australasia and The Americas. It's a simple enough concept, but the authors undoubtedly will have had to have made some heartbreaking choices when coming up with the final 32. Bohar snapper at Ras Mohammed and the manatees of Crystal River seem natural choices while curiosities such as the swimming pigs of The Exumas make sure that the book is never dull.

The images are of good quality (we particularly like the crocs of Cuba) and the layout is clear and unfussy, with bite-size information displayed at the beginning of chapters and longer essays describing the sites. It's an enjoyable read, but the really fun part is matching where you've been or where you would like to go with the choices that the Robertson-Browns have made, and then seeing where you agree or disagree.

The question is which ones have you dived?
