Malta's Azure Window Collapses

MaltaDivingIntro shutterstock 140999074

One of Malta’s most iconic rock formations – the Azure Window, has disappeared.

The natural, limestone archway was located at Dwerja Bay on Malta’s second island of Gozo, and has been one of the most popular tourist attractions in terms of natural features in the general area, visited by photographers and divers alike.

Known locally as Tieqa tad-Dwejra, the Azure window has served as a backdrop for television and film productions, most recently in the popular HBO fantasy drama Game of Thrones.

Heavy storms have caused not just the arch, but the supporting pillars to collapse into the sea. Joseph Muscat, prime minister of Malta stated that 'Reports commissioned over the years indicated that this landmark would be hard hit by unavoidable natural corrosion. That sad day arrived,' adding on his Twitter feed that the sight was 'heartbreaking'

We await reports from divers as to the situation underwater.
