Japanese camera housing manufacturer Epoque World is the latest company to enter into the burgeoning action camera market with its new 1080p high definition eDivecam.

This camera and housing combo certainly isn’t the smallest in its class, around a third larger than the GoPro, but the eDivecam does have an in-built 2" TFT LCD screen and its seven push-button controls are simple and easy to use.

Powered by a single NP-40 Li-Ion battery pack, the camera has a USB interface for charging and downloading, two video-out connections plus a micro SD card slot with a maximum capacity of up to 32mb.

Utilising a fixed focus, 140-degree coverage wide angle lens, the camera looks and feels a little toylike. However once encased in its 60m-rated housing and secured by a formidable locking catch it should have no prob

lems standing up to the rigours of normal diving use.

Navigating around its functions is simple: the on/off and shutter release buttons sit side by side at the top of the housing and five buttons are adjacent to the rear screen. These are responsible for display, mode, menu and ok/select. There’s also a 4X digital zoom, useable in still and video modes barring full 1920 x 1080p.

For a small and relatively inexpensive package, the eDivecam’s specifications are quite impressive: there’s a choice of spot, centre or average metering; a self timer; time lapse and burst feature for stills; three-step choices for contrast and sharpening; plus exposure compensation and a motion sensor.

One useful feature that isn’t always available on other cameras in the genre is the ability to manually set white balance, avoiding a blue or green cast to your images. Once selected via the menu, you simply press the shutter button once and off you go.

While the eDivecam fits quite nicely in the hand without any add-ons, you’ll probably need artificial light when you’re deeper than 5m or so. Epoque’s EL-100L 1,000 lumen LED video light is small but powerful, and even combined with a tray and ‘bendy’ arm to attach to the eDivecam, the set-up could quite easily hang unobtrusively from the wrist or be stored in a BC pocket.

While perfectly acceptable stills can be taken at any time, even while recording video, do be aware that with the camera’s not-so-large 5 megapixel sensor you’ll be unlikely to achievemagazine-quality images.

DIVE SAYS

If you’re looking for an entry-level action camera on a budget, then the eDivecam is an option. Its slightly large size need not be a disadvantage, and while its 5mp sensor is more suited to taking snapshots, quality video is certainly attainable from the eDivecam.
