Croatia Photo Tips

The dazzling islands of Croatia offer fantastic photo opportunities both below and above the surface. Underwater photographer Christian Skauge shares his top photo tips for this versatile destination

Crotia phototips

Since Croatia is mainly a wide-angle destination, make sure you have the right lenses. I'd bring a fisheye and a wide rectilinear lens. There will be plenty of light, so even lenses with higher F-number such as the Sigma 10-20mm will be useful.

Wide-Angle

Croatia's is most known for excellent wide-angle opportunities. The visibility (often 30m+) gives great opportunity to shoot reefscapes, and the lack of particles in the water mostly makes positioning the strobes a relatively easy task.

The reefs are rocky and mostly covered in grey-green algae until you reach about 17-18m, and it is below this depth you will begin to find the really good, colourful wide-angle stuff. Most dive sites have a drop-off and a steep wall going down to 40-45m or more, so watch your depth and time.

Great silhouettes of divers can easily be accomplished under overhangs, and black and white shots can create dramatic effects in the shallows.

Macro

For macro photos one lens is enough. The clear water lets you shoot from a reasonable distance, so take a 100/105mm which provides good working range – and it's also quite useful when shooting fish at a distance, too.

Macro life is abundant on the walls and in between the gorgonians, but time is also well-spent in the shallows: Plenty of nudibranchs like the orange-eyed Cratena peregrina, octopus, hermit crabs, little algae umbrellas and curious blennies and triplefins. The octopus were a joy to work with.

Half and Half

When the liveaboard lies idle in between dives, remember that this a great opportunity to play with some half'n'half shots. A big domeport makes shooting these kinds of images much easier. Ask your buddy or one of the other divers on the boat to help you model – half'n'half-images are always much more exciting with someone in them.
