CMAS World Championship of Underwater Photography 2017, La Paz, Mexico
CMAS (World Underwater Federation) organizes an Underwater Photography World Championship every two years. Individual national federations pick teams to send to the event after two years of competition at home.
The venue for 2017 was La Paz, in Baja California, Mexico.
Competitors from 19 countries - Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, South Korea, Croatia, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, France, Holland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, and Turkey - joined the competition.
Medals for five different categories were on offer: Fish, Macro, Close-up with a theme (Sea Lions), Wide angle and Wide angle with a model. Competitors had to take their photographs during four dives over two days, and they were required to submit their entries without digital manipulation.
The judges - Víctor Isla (Cuba), Bruce Shafer (USA), Jacopo Brunetti (Italy), Rui Guerra (Portugal), Lasse Gustafsson (Sweden), Kurt Amsler (Switzerland) and Leonardo González (Venezuela) announced the winners:
Overall gold medal and World Champion: Rafael Caballero (Spain)
Silver medal: Jesús Dorta (Spain)
Bronze medal: Cenk Ceylanoğlu (Turkey)
