Photographers from around the world are being invited to enter the United Nations World Oceans Day Photo Competition 2020. The competition is open to all, both amateur and professional, and the winning images will be recognised at the UN World Oceans Day conference on Monday, 8 June – to be held this year as a virtual event in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The winner’s photo will also be published on the official UN World Oceans Day website (www.unworldoceansday.org) as well as on social media sites including the UN World Oceans Day Instagram account @unworldoceansday.

According to a 20 April press release, this year's competition 'aims to inspire the creation of imagery capturing the beauty, the challenges and the importance of the ocean. Photography engages people from around the world across diverse cultures, geographies and generations. A powerful image can change people’s behaviours and encourage them to be active participants to promote change, rather than merely bystanders.'

Ten categories are available for entries, including a youth category for photographers under the age of 18, and four new themes for the 2020 competition: Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean, Rejuvenation, Digital Ocean Photo Art and Science in Action: Ocean Decade 2021- 2030.

All participants are required to sign a charter committing themselves to a competition code of ethics, ensuring that the subjects of the photographs are not stressed or endangered in any way. Participants must also commit to using their experience to raise awareness and provide education to help preserve the oceans.

Ellen Cuylaerts, Curator for the UN World Oceans Day Photo Competition, said: 'Our past encounters with marine life are now more cherished than ever before. So many of us around the world are longing to be in the water again and enjoying the beauty of our seas. Today we need to be reminded of how vital a resource the ocean is and how urgently we need to protect it for present and future generations. This photo competition not only showcases stunning photography but also reveals the emotional stories behind the images from people who are dedicated ocean ambassadors.'

The 2020 UN World Oceans Day Photo Competition is hosted for the seventh year by the Dive Photo Guide. Entries are must be submitted before 12:00am Eastern Standard Time on 3 May 2020.
