Know Where You Dive With the UWIS Diver Tracking System

Sponsored article 1

UWIS is a new underwater navigation, communications and surveillance system that utilizes the principles of GPS triangulation and ultrasound underwater communication.

Designed for use in a range of applications from professional search and recovery operations to recreational diving, the UWIS tracks diver location and enables communication between divers and the surface support, especially useful for systematic and efficient operations in challenging conditions such as poor visibility and strong currents.

Dive data is relayed to the surface via a buoy and dive leaders at the surface can use the UWIS-Tracker software to track the progress of the divers in real time. UWIS provides location information for underwater displays such as tablets, cameras and mobile phones, guiding the divers to their pre-determined destination, or to help them stay on the course of a pre-planned route. The ability to set waypoints for SAR operations means divers can return to the same location instantly without having to navigate from shore or using the seabed.

The diver tracking software operates below the water for continuous communication between divers, reference and monitoring from the surface

The system is able to track up to 100 divers simultaneously over an area of 1000 meters across, to a maximum depth of 150m. The UWIS is accurate to within a metre of the diver's current location. Dive data can be logged for further reference, and videos, routes and other information can be recorded for further analysis, training, or post-dive sharing of experiences.

The UWIS system communicates underwater and consists of three buoys for triangulation and a diver unit that is attached to the air tank. The UWIS PRO Case is a ready-to-use set for divers which can be used out of the box with little installation needed. The military-standard waterproof SKB hard case contains six diver units, chargers, three buoys and an optional, rugged Panasonic Toughbook CF20A laptop. The UWIS Tracker software is preloaded on the laptop or can be downloaded from www.uwis.fi
