Thai Airways Bans Shark Fins

Thai Airways has given in to the growing global pressure and announced it will no longer transport shark fins on its cargo flights

The change of heart is the result of a successful campaign led by 17-year-old high school student Ob Saiyavath in Bangkok whose online petition demanding the airline to change its terms and conditions and ban shark fins went viral.

The airline announced this week: 'As part of the world community sharing in the great concern for the protection of endangered species and the environment, Thai Airways International has implemented its own official policy to place an embargo on the shipping of shark fin products.'

Thai Airways is the 23rd airline to ban of shark fins from their cargo flights, following Singapore Airlines and the Philippines' largest airline Cebu Airlines who announced a ban last month.

The ban officially came into effect on 15 July but the airline has been avoiding the shipping of shark fins for more than a year, the statement read.
