A London-based boardshorts brand is setting its sights on creating the world’s first ‘ocean plastic shorts’ in 2016

Riz Boardshorts are aspires to blaze new trails in sustainable design by developing board shorts that are 100% recycled, with fabric, zips and cords made from plastic litter collected on beaches.

The company have an ongoing crowdfunding campaign on Kriticalmass; donations will go towards each step of their goals, from sponsoring beach clean-ups to developing and producing recycled and recyclable boardshorts.

‘Our ultimate aspiration is to turn ocean and beach plastics, the water bottles that end up floating in the sea or littering beaches, into beautiful shorts,’ the brand website reads.

To do this, Riz will sponsor 10 beach clean-ups in 2015 for the dual purpose of reducing beach litter and collecting 25,000 plastic debris to recycle into fabric.

Alternatively, you can send Riz your old swim shorts, which will be sent to a plant and reused to create new textile. In return, you get a discount on a new pair of Riz shorts.
