American Airlines Drops Shark Fins

American Airlines announced a ban of shark fins on its commercial flights on Tuesday

The US carrier American Airlines said on Tuesday it had stopped the shipment of shark fins as of 4 March.

Documents obtained by the conservation groups PRETOMA and Turtle Island Restoration Network had revealed two large shipments of shark fins from Costa Rica to the Hong Kong via hubs in the US in the last six months. The ban went into effect on 4 March after the airline was presented with the documents.

In response to an article published in The Costa Rican Times published earlier this week and following concerned tweets by readers, American Airlines announced the ban on their Twitter account on Tuesday.

Doug Karpa of Turtle Island Restoration Network said the airline deserved 'full credit for taking proactive measures immediately'.

American Airlines, which is owned by the American Airlines group, has not released an official statement yet but confirmed the ban with The Dodo earlier this week, adding that the ban also applies to US Airways, also owned by the group.

'To see American Airlines, a major U.S. airline with extensive influence, publicly acknowledge that they are no longer going to be shipping shark fins is incredible,' said Joanna Nasar, communication manager for Turtle Island Restoration Network. 'It is what we have been working towards for months, and I applaud them for doing the right thing and hope it will inspire other carriers to take action.'
