Deepest Diver Leads Record Clean-Up Event

World record holder for the deepest scuba dive, Ahmed Gabr, set a new record for the largest underwater clean-up

After setting a new world record for the deepest scuba dive in 2014, Ahmed Gabr has broken another record last weekend when he motivated 644 divers to join the world's largest underwater clean-up to date.

On Saturday, 644 divers gathered at the Hilton Plaza, Hurghada,  including Khaled Rami, Egypt's recently appointed Minister of Tourism, and the Red Sea Governor Ahmes Abdullah who both participated.

'This international event will have a profound impact on enhancing tourism and drawing the world’s attention to recreational diving in Egypt, as well as the state’s interest in preserving a clean marine environment to sustain ecological balance,' the Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted Mostafa Abdel Latif, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism as saying.

Ahmed had announced the event several months ago, attempting to bring together 400 volunteers to clear the Red Sea off Hurghada from debris.

The 644 men and women beat last year's 'Underwater Cleaning' record holder of a 300-people strong team from the United Arab Emirates.
