Oil Washes Up On Queensland Beaches

Palm-sized oil clumps have washed up on three Queensland beaches after a reported oil spill in the Townsville area last week

Maritime Safety Queensland and Townsville Water Police confirmed that 'weathered oil' was found on three beaches on Friday, including Mullingan Beach on Hinchinbrook Island, an pristine, uninhabited national park.

Forrest Beach near Ingham and beaches on Palm Island are also affected.

Last week, authorities had confirmed reports of an one-kilometre-long oil streak near Townsville.

North Queensland Conservation Council co-ordinator Wendy Tubman expressed concern about how Queensland authorities have been handling the situation, the Brisbane Times reports.

'It seems a bit slow, it's now a week later,' she said. 'It seems like it was downplayed for a long time.'

'Now they are saying they have actually found bits of it on land that you can see. But what about all the rest of it, that you can't see. How far has that dispersed and what has been the impact?,' Tubman added.

A statement released by Marine Safety Queensland announced that beach clean-up crews were set to start work on Saturday morning. However, when contacted by the Brisbane Times, Hinchinbrook Resort manager Alan Hamilton said he had not been contacted about the beach clean-up. In fact he said he know nothing about oil being washed up on Mullingan Beach.
