Craft brewery makes edible rings to stop pollution

beer

An American craft brewery has launched edible six-pack rings to help save marine life. Most plastic six-pack rings are discarded and pose a serious risk to wildlife particularly turtles and sea birds.

Saltwater Brewery, a craft beer brand based in Florida, decided to make its six-pack rings from barley and wheat and other beer by-products from the brewing process. Not only are they completely safe for humans and fish to eat, they are 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable.

The edible rings are more expensive to make than plastic rings, but the creators hope other breweries will follow suit, causing production costs to come down, making edible rings competitive with plastic ones.

'We hope to influence the big guys,' Chris Goves, Saltwater Brewery's president, said. 'And hopefully inspire them to get on board.'
