Misool and Misool Foundation won the WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Environment Award in Bangkok. This prestigious awards ceremony was part of the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Global Summit in Bangkok on 26-27 April 2017.

The Environment Award celebrates the tourism operator whose work improves biodiversity, promotes conservation, minimises use of scarce resources, and develops mitigation and adaptation strategies for climate change. Misool and Misool Foundation were selected as winners from more than 200 applicants in 73 countries.

Marit Miners collected the award on behalf of the team at Misool and Misool Foundation. 'This award is a result of over a decade of hard work to defend the heart of marine biodiversity in Indonesia,' Marit said. 'Conservation gains are the result of tireless work behind the scenes, from our Ranger Patrol who guard the Misool Marine Reserve 24/7, to our Bank Sampah Community Recycling Team whose diligence keeps 200 tons of trash off our reefs every day and our research teams who spent countless hours at sea to collect data which protects iconic marine species from extinction.'

'This award is for everyone,' Marit continued. 'Our guests, our incredible team, the communities in South Raja Ampat who give us the ability to protect Misool’s incredible marine resources and to our partners whose ongoing belief in our vision has allowed us to achieve great things. Thank you.'

Misool uses tourism as a mechanism to support the conservation work that is carried out by Misool Foundation. Central to the mission the belief that sustainable tourism and community-based conservation are mutually beneficial. The business, the foundation, and the community all share one common asset: a healthy, flourishing reef system. Together Misool and Misool Foundation have and will continue to do whatever is required to protect the world’s richest reefs.

Misool is a world-class Resort and Conservation Centre located in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, and the associated Misool Foundation is a registered Indonesian charity and non-profit organisation dedicated to marine conservation through sustainable tourism and education. Since the resort opened in 2006 they have had some notable achievements in terms of reducing illegal fishing, restoring the biomass of fish life around the reefs by as much as 250 per cent and increasing the shark population by over 25 per cent compared to other locations.
