Reef Check and Trash Hero Malaysia Join Forces for Nationwide Cleanup
Reef Check Malaysia and Trash Hero Malaysia are joining forces this year to conduct a nationwide clean-up effort on Saturday, 21 September 2019. The cleanup is to be held in conjunction with the International Coastal Clean-up Day as well as the World Clean-up Day, which fall on the same day this year.
The International Coastal Clean-up is the world’s biggest volunteer effort to protect the oceans. Founded in the US in 1986 by volunteers from Ocean Conservancy, the event now sees millions of people from more than 100 countries around the world gather each year to clear trash from beaches. Data regarding the amount and types of litter are collected and recorded by volunteers on the 'Clean Swell' app and sent to Ocean Conservancy for analysis, providing further insight into methods of tackling the worldwide problem of marine debris.
World Clean-up Day began in 2008 in Estonia and, through the work of the Let’s Do It World organisation, has also become a global movement with millions of participating volunteers.
Reef Check Malaysia has been conducting annual beach clean-ups in conjunction with the International Coastal Clean-up for several years, and this year will be working with Trash Hero to coordinate clean-up efforts in both coastal and urban areas. 'Beach clean-ups are a tool to raise awareness on marine debris,' said Julian Hyde of Reef Check Malaysia. 'The long-term goal is to prevent trash from escaping into the environment in the first place, and it is everyone’s responsibility to practice better waste management and recycling habits.' Coca-Cola Malaysia is raising awareness of the event through a social media campaign.
Trash Hero Malaysia, part of global volunteer movement Trash Hero World, focuses on cleanups in urban areas. By combining each of the group's efforts, it is hoped that awareness of the problems caused by waste across different environments will prevent further contamination of the oceans. Mohd Faisal Abdir Rani head of Trash Hero Malaysia said: 'In the effort for a cleaner Malaysia, THM hopes this event will inspire more Malaysians to be aware of littering and create a more mindful society about the waste issue surrounding us.'
