A Danish firm has developed what it claims is the first action camera for divers - the Octospot.

It is depth rated to more than 200m and is also designed to be easy to use with gloves. The camera can be hand held or mounted directly on a diving mask or a third person mount - an underwater selfie stick!

The US$350 Octospot logs data such as temperature, depth and time and automatically links it with its video footage. It comes with an app developed to pre-program the camera settings according to the environment of your dive. The app also has a share function that makes it possible to seamlessly post selected clips on social media.

It  has a snap-record function, which allows you to record and mark short video sequences during your dive. As soon as you come up to the surface, you can view your clips on your smart phone  and pick the marked sequence you want to share on social media.

'We wanted to focus on divers and give them the ultimate action camera specifically for diving. This goal has had a tremendous impact on the decision process along the way. This is not just about having a top-notch resolution and sharpness, the best components and the newest technology. It is about how we combine these elements in an intuitive design with diving specific functionalities, such as the dive log, share and camera in one', says Martin Holmberg, one of the developers.

The  camera comes with electronic image stabilisation, high dynamic range and lens distortion correction. It can record for more than two hours at 1080p 60fps.

Michael Trøst, one of the Octospot developers said a limited number of the cameras are to be offered to divers across the world to test. He said 'Our goal is to make Octospot the world's greatest action camera for diving. That is why we need feedback from divers around the world.'

The people behind the launch previously developed an underwater camera, the WaterWolf, for anglers which won design and product awards in 2014, 15 and 16.

Octospot has launched on Kickstarter, where divers can pre-order a camera. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1857123020/1269710166?token=cf169f13
