Diver Finds 300-Year-Old Treasure
Professional treasure hunter finds a 300-year-old gold artefact on a wreck off the Florida coast
Eric Schmitt, 27, found the item last month while on a treasure hunt with his family. Schmitt captured his discovery on camera. The footage shows him digging through sand and shells before he finds the square-shaped gold piece. Obviously excited the man dives up to the surface to share the discovery with his family.
The small gold item is the missing piece of a religious artefact which was found at the same underwater site in 1989. Eric's find turned out to be the back of a gold filigree pyx which was used by Spanish priests to hold the holy Eucharist during Catholic mass.
Last year, the family had already found gold chains and coins worth more than $300,000 on the same wreck.
The ship was part of a Spanish fleet that sank during a hurricane 300 years ago off Florida's east coast.
The find will be divided between the State of Florida, Brent Brisben, owner of the wreck site, and Schmitt himself.
