Artificial Reef Sculptures Crushed

Replicas of the giant Easter Island statues intended to create an artificial reef off the Florida coast were crushed during a mishap during their lowering

The 15 giant statues were to be installed in the Atlantic Ocean off Deefield Beach, Florida, on Sunday when the barge carrying the 300-ton sculptures overturned and landed on top of the replicas.

Intended to create a new artificial reef, the $500,000 project was funded by Boca Racon philanthropist Margaret Blume who watched the accident in anguish but vowed that 'this is not the end of the story.'

'It is disappointing, but there is always a gamble with ocean projects,' project engineer Rick Iossi told the Sun Sentinel.

The statues, created by artist Dennis MacDonald of Pompano Beach, are replicas of the iconic Moai statues created by the Rapa Nui people some 1,000 years ago.
