Divers Film Inside Australian Sinkhole

Divers have filmed a giant sinkhole that opened up on a campsite in Queensland, Australia

Divers from the Wolf Rock Dive centre ignored safety warnings and explored the 150-metre long and 50 metre wide sinkhole that opened on 26 September. The sinkhole had swallowed several caravans and tents pitched on the MV Beagle campsite at Inskip Point. The area is well-known for sinkholes which appear without warning.

The footage shows how the group of divers carefully navigate through tree branches and debris.

Speaking to 7 NewsKevin Phillips of Wolf Rock Dive described what the group had found underwater.

'Half the forest has gone into the sinkhole, so it's an absolute maze of trees and bushes and timber and then there's the debris field from the caravan.

'The bottom of the sinkhole is still very fluid, it's a real loose soupy sandy fluid, you can stick your whole arm into it like that and pull it back out.'

Divers said that they would continue to try and salvage some of the items.
