Thistlegorm to Close for 2 Weeks in January

The wreck site of the SS Thistlegorm will be closed for 15 days at the beginning of January 2016 when new mooring blocks are being installed

The Red Sea's most popular wreck has been under immense strain of dozens of dive boats mooring directly on the wreck daily.

HEPCA announced the temporary closure of the site on Facebook last week, saying 18 new mooring blocks will be lowered into the water around the site with the help of the Egyptian Navy.

The statement also announced a new code of conduct in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and the CDWS to regulate diving activities.

Divers have reported damage of the wreck over the last few years and a January 2015 documentary showed the wide destruction by steel mooring lines on the wreck, calling for a safe mooring system (see the short documentary below).

The 'long overdue' decision was welcomed by divers on the social media platform.
