Turkish authorities this week sank a 54m A300 Airbus off the Aegean coast to attract divers.

It took two-and-a-half hours to sink the 36-year-old passenger aircraft  near the resort of Kuşadasi, in Aydin province, 50 miles south of Izmir.

The Airbus joins smaller Dakota planes sunk in recent years off the resorts of Kas and Bodrum which have proved to be big draws for divers.

The local authority bought the Airbus for US$100,000. It has a wingspan of 44m and the plan is to sink it at around 20m in an upright position.

Aydin’s mayor, Özlem Çerçioğlu, said: 'Our goal is to make Kuşadası a centre of diving tourism and to protect the underwater life. And with these goals in mind, we have made one of the biggest artificial reefs in the world.'
