Werner Lau restarts operations in November

The Werner Lau dive centre in Sharm El Shiekh is to reopen in November. It shut in December last year after most European countries stopped direct flights to the resort following the downing of a Russian airliner with the loss of 245 crew and passengers shortly after takeoff from Sharm.

What was once the leading dive resort in the area attracting travellers from Western Europe and Russia in vast numbers, has suffered a desperate year with virtually no European tourists. Major dive centres such as Werner Lau and Sinai Dive Centre have been mothballed and many smaller ventures have shut.

Aviation authorities strongly criticised security at Sharm airport after the bombing and many governments advised tourists not to use the airport. Nearly all direct flights into Sharm were suspended. German authorities recently announced flights will be resumed in November.

The British Foreign Office has yet to lift is ban despite last week a group of senior MPs calling on flights to be resumed and confirmed that UK transport officials had given the airport a clean bill of health
