On The First Dive of Christmas, My Buddy Gave to Me…
Back in February, we had the fantastic opportunity to visit the very remote, and very wonderful island of St Helena, a tiny volcanic rock that is - quite literally - in the middle of nowhere.
It is home to the only known aggregation of whale sharks where adult males and females get together in equal numbers, an almost certain sign that St Helena is where the grown-ups go to find partners and make more whale sharks.
The first commercial flights to St Helena started in October and now this South Atlantic island will be able to welcome adventurous divers. When we dived it in February we got to explore sites that have seen fewer divers in the island's entire history than one busy Red Sea dive centre sees in an average week.
Check out Crowley's trip report, first published in our summer print edition, and his subsequent interview with Dr Alistair Dove of Georgia Aquarium, lead researcher into St Helena's whale sharks, and for loads more information on the island and its diving, don't forget to check out our dive guide to St Helena.
