More Routes Open to Sharm El Sheikh - But Not From the UK
As the summer holidays draw ever nearer, tour operators and airlines start updating their schedules to make use of their most popular routes. Although the UK still refuses to lift their travel restrictions to Sharm airport, other countries are adding more flights, including:
In addition to the German tour operator FTI's flights from Amsterdam, TUI Fly have added two new services from Amsterdam and Eindhoven,. Package deals are available: www.tui.nl
Although Air Italy appear to have dropped services from Bergamo and Verona, they have opened up new routes from Lamezia Terme, Naples, Olbia and Palermo to complement their services from Milan and Rome www.airitaly.com
Germany already has the widest range of available flights to Sharm, and Air Cairo have added Frankfurt to their Düsseldorf and Munich services. www.flyaircairo.com

Getting to Sharm from the UK
Firstly - it's important that you consider the FCO's travel advice before you decide to travel to Sharm. Remember that the advisory is for the flights in and out of the airport only, and not the resort itself (FCO current travel advice for Egypt) Check your current insurance company will cover you if you travel through Sharm airport on an indirect flight. Westfield Sub Aqua & Marine Insurance Services is recommended by a number of visitors. 'We are happy to confirm that we continue to offer insurance for Sharm (including the Airport) and Dahab with our standard policy,' says Managing Director Nick Caldwell.
The easiest indirect routes to Sharm from the UK are the single-carrier options with one check-in in the UK and bags transferred all the way to Sharm. Egyptair and Turkish airlines have scored particularly highly with UK visitors for their generous baggage allowance and included food and drink.
- Egyptair from London Heathrow via Cairo www.egyptair.com
- Pegasus from Stansted via Istanbul. www.flypgs.com
- Turkish Airways from Birmingham, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester via Istanbul. www.turkishairlines.com
One possiiblility is to fly via Hurghada, to which Thomas Cook, TUI and Easyjet all have regular flights. Connections to Hurghada through Egyptair are only available on Sundays and Tuesdays, however, so this is not the best option unless you're on an extended break and wish to visit multiple resorts. The ferry service between Hurghada and Sharm is no longer operational and there does not appear to be any plan for a replacement. Alternatively, visitors might wish to look at routes that involve travelling by any of the other destinations listed below.
