Planet Dive Holidays on Why Mauritius is a Great Family Dive Destination
If you’re looking for an amazing family holiday destination, where tropical island beauty and lounging at luxury hotels provides the perfect compliment to some fun diving, then Mauritius is the place to be. Find out why Planet Dive Holidays recommends Mauritius for the ultimate luxury family dive holiday
The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius is ringed by a variety of dive sites including marine protected areas and various wrecks. Most of the best dive sites are located along the leeward west and northwest side of the island. The ‘Trou Aux Biches’ area is best for a number of wrecks of between 20 to 35m. For marine life and drift dives, the offshore islands further north are really good.
The summer months from November to March can be very hot and humid but the lack of wind makes the offshore islands more accessible. The winter months from May to October offer a cooler but still very good climate, amazing value and the best visibility.
With direct flights from the UK and a four hour time difference, Mauritius is a very accessible destination and a great one to travel to with kids. The luxury resorts found on the island have everything you could possibly wish for, including multiple restaurants and a whole host of inclusive water activities including water skiing, snorkelling, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and windsurfing.
The best family hotels also offer fun activity programmes and free kids clubs. If you want to introduce the youngsters to the underwater world, some of the dive centres offer 'Bubblemaker' courses (minimum 8yrs) in the hotel pool and sheltered lagoon areas.
For the European summer holiday period, Mauritius is especially great value with up to 60 per cent off the top hotels, plus lots of added values like free board and room upgrades. Mauritius is one of the best value luxury holiday destinations during this normally very expensive period.
One of Planet’s favourite hotels is the newly renovated LUX Grand Gaube, with a dive centre located right on site. The hotel combines a chic ambience with quirky touches, such as a food truck, ice-cream limo and rum tree house. Its tranquil setting on a peninsula at the north of the island protects its lagoon from the wind, providing the perfect spot to while away the hours in the sun, in a location where the best dive sites on the island couldn’t be closer.
Another great option for divers is Westin Turtle Bay. Set in a protected marine park on the island’s north-west coast, this hotel offers the best of both worlds, with guests able to access both the lagoon and wild ocean from its beaches. Also located nearby is Blue Safari – a unique submarine experience that gives kids and non-divers a look into life on the ocean floor. The family can experience life at 35m underwater while you're out diving, with this one-of-a-kind activity.
When you’ve had your fix of the underwater world, Planet recommends taking a few days off and heading inland to Chalets Chamarel. Located in the beautiful forested inland of the island and offering panoramic views of the lagoon, forests and ocean, these brand new chalets offer a completely unique Mauritian experience. Spend your days ziplining, hiking or taking in the majesty of Mauritius’ unique Seven Coloured Earth which is located on the same property as the chalets. When you’re done exploring, relax in the infinity pool or at the restaurant next to your chalet and simply drink in the endless views of the Indian Ocean and the magnificent sunsets.
