A new luxury resort is opened in the Maldives' South Malé Atoll which is surrounded by six great wrecks to explore - some just metres from the beach.

The OZEN Reserve Vittaveli is part of the  Atmosphere Hotel and resorts group, highly popular with divers.

It has 89 villas and suites with private swimming pools plus the 3,500-sqm Royal Reserve' super suite. Residents can also use the island's  25m MY Vittaveli yacht.

There are six local wrecks to explore, reachable within 2-10 minutes. These include:

  • The Schooner, a 20m-long yacht sunk in the early 1990s, only 150m from the beach and sitting at a depth of 22m. Many snapper and glassfish have made this wreck their home
  • The Speedboat, which lies about 95m  from the beach, on the eastern side of the island, and at only 10m deep which means it can sometimes even be seen while snorkelling above. Schools of batfish are resident.

  • The Colosseum, which is a sunken Dhoni, also about 95m from the beach, has settled just beyond the speedboat at a depth of 8 to 12m. It was named after the Colosseum in Rome because of the appearance of its hull sitting above the ocean floor. This wreck is home to a large school of batfish
  • The Yacht is located a further 20m to the east from the Colosseum, around 170m from the island. It lies at a depth of 22m and is home to an abundance of colourful corals
  • The Fishing Boat sits immediately south of the island – and sits upright at 22m, reaching 3m from the surface.  The Fishing Boat is covered in hard and soft corals and the wheel room houses a school of glassfish.
  • The most fascinating wreck is the Alia, a cargo ship that sunk sometime in the 1990s. The Alia lies at about 35m, with its top cabin coming up to 20m. The wreck is covered in impressive coral growth throughout and home to an abundance of marine life.

The resort also has two house reefs, great for dawn and dusk dives. Experienced divers can experience the nearby excellent channel dives, where sharks and seasonal manta rays are often encountered in the strong currents.

The local reefs offer a range of colourful fringing drop-offs, and there are a number of first-class night dives nearby.

The new resort adds to the company's  OZEN Collection, following the success 2016 launch of its OZEN Maadhoo resort.
