Meet The Mysterious Spookfish
Scientists of the Okeanos Explorer Northeast US Canyons Expedition filmed the rare smallspine spookfish (Harriotta haeckeli) in Hydrographer Canyon, 140 km off the coast of Nantucket Island
At a lenght of more than 72 cm the smallspine spookfish is the smallest species of the family of Rhinochimaeridae, commonly known as long-nosed chimaeras.
The specimen adds to the list of only a few individuals that have been previously recorded off southern Greenland, the Canary Islands and New Zealand and. They live in depths of 1,000 to 2,600m but hardly anything is known about their biology, ecology and population.
