Sperm Whale Birth Caught On Video

Wildlife photographer Kurt Amsler captured what he described to be the 'most powerful experience' of his 45-year long underwater photography career: the birth of a sperm whale

The footage shows a pregnant female sperm whale swimming among a pod of off the Azores when she suddenly gives birth. The 'midwives' of the pod escort the newborn to the surface for its first breath.

'Newborn whales are not able to swim within the first minutes and would drown without assistance,' Amsler explains in an interview with Cater News. 'That’s why there are always other females in attendance as midwives. By this time, the mother has arrived to support her newborn, which is easily 2.80 metres in length.'
