The body of Candian film-maker and activist Rob Stewart was recovered on Friday after he disappeared on Tuesday evening after surfacing from a dive.

Stewart, famous among the diving community and conservation groups for his magnificent film Sharkwater, was diving the wreck of The Queen of Nassau near Alligator reef off the coast of Florida when he was lost from sight after initially giving an 'Okay' signal to his boat crew.

The cause of death is not certain at this time, however, reports in the media suggest that he and his buddies were diving on rebreathers, to deeper depths than usual. The Queen of Nassau is reportedly located in around 65m of water.

According to reports, his buddy was picked up by their dive boat first and lost consciousness immediately after boarding. A US Coastguard rescue boat and helicopter were launched immediately after Stewart was reported missing, and an outpouring of concern over social media brought the rescue attempts to the attention of local citizens who launched their own vessels to join in the search.

Stewart's body was recovered by volunteer firefighters approximately 100m from his last known sighting, just minutes after the official search was called off.

Sharkwater 2 was in production and scheduled for release later in 2017
