With the scientific expedition to Belize’s Blue Hole underway, the initial phase of the expedition was broadcast live on Sunday, 2 December by the Discovery Channel

The live broadcast profiled the expedition team and followed them from the surface to the bottom of the Blue Hole. Aquatica’s Chief Pilot and Oceanographer, Erika Bergman, was joined by Sir Richard Branson and Fabien Cousteau for the expedition. As the team descended into the Blue Hole, a discussion about ocean conservation and preservation formed part of the live broadcast. Aquatica Submarine's mission is the first to deploy advanced sonar technology to map the entirety of the Blue Hole's interior.

'Having a media partner like Discovery for the Expedition will give us the chance to share our amazing experiences to a much wider audience,' said President and CEO of Aquatica Submarines Harvey Flemming in the run-up to the exploration dive. 'The live broadcast with Sir Richard Branson and Fabien Cousteau will add a great deal of impact as both of these ocean advocates will be able to give some tremendous insights as to how we can and will help preserve our world’s precious oceans.' Richard Branson's Virgin Voyages was also announced as a 'platinum sponsor' of the event.

Situated in the centre of Lighthouse Reef 40 miles off the coast of Belize, the Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole that is 318m (1,043ft) in diameter and124m (407ft)  deep. The Blue Hole is a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Blue Hole was named by Jacques Cousteau in 1971 as one of the 'top five scuba diving sites in the world.'
