Featured Photographer Luke

My name is Luke Coley, I was born in Chippenham, England. I am now based in Mexico, where I work as an instructor and run underwater photography trips. Mexico offers an incredible variety, it is somewhere I can incorporate my love of travel, big animals and beautiful environments all in one.

As a child, my fascination with the ocean was stoked by local fishing and aquarium visits. This combined with my interest in sharks and rays eventually led me to scuba diving.

In 2011, after a move to Australia, my passion for the ocean and photography had a true chance to grow when I rented a Canon S90 while diving the Great Barrier Reef and snapped my first successful underwater photos of a green turtle.

My career in diving started in the form of selling tours in Vietnam and in 2013, I became a certified diver. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work around the world including Fiji, the Cayman Islands, Indonesia, Palau, Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands and Mexico.  I have dived in more than 20 different countries while gaining the credentials of PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, TDI Full Cave Diver and SSI Level II Freediver.

As a photographer, I began shooting while working in Fuerteventura, taking shots for dive students.  It was in Komodo that I purchased my first Olympus TG-4.  In my spare time, I would dive the house reef and work on techniques.

The real leap was when I joined the Siren and Master Fleets of Worldwide Dive and Sail. I worked as a cruise director and dive master and was introduced to some of the world’s top underwater photographers, which inspired me to invest in a Sony A7rii in the Nauticam housing.  This gave me the tools and the opportunity to really grow.

I identify as a 'Shark Guy' above all else, and my favourite species would have to be the scalloped hammerhead. Mexico is my top spot for dive locations, with my favourite dive site being El Cañon of San Benedicto Island in the Revillagigedo Archipelago, where my favourite shark can often be seen schooling in large numbers, and even getting cleaned at an amazingly active cleaning station along with silvertip and Galápagos sharks.

In terms of photography, my preference lies with wide-angle shooting and I personally enjoy simple yet impressionable images. I try to take photos utilising different methods, with one tank or doubles, freediving, or within caverns and caves. I also get a lot of satisfaction as a dive guide from helping photographers who dive with me getting the shots they want because it means putting them in the right place at the right time.
