Deptherapy's Expedition to Grenada Hailed a Great Success

A group of British veterans and serving personnel of the British Armed Forces have just returned from an expedition to Grenada in the Caribbean where with the help of rehabilitation charity Deptherapy they ran a coral reef survey.

Deptherapy visited Grenada in October after its original two-week expedition to Egypt had to be called off due to Covid19 restraints. The UK charity, which supports the physiological and mental rehabilitation of wounded ex-service personnel, instead chose to visit Grenada, as part of a two-year programme funded by the Armed Forces’ Covenant Fund Trust’s (AFCFT) Positive Pathways Programme.

Dr Richard Castle, an independent consultant psychologist specialising in trauma and Deptherapy vice president said: 'The majority of Deptherapy’s beneficiaries have mental health challenges, predominantly Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. For the last 18 months expeditions to Egypt have been cancelled, re-booked and cancelled again due to COVID. This can be extremely difficult for those with mental health challenges. I would like to say a huge thank you to the Armed Forces’ Covenant Fund Trust for being so flexible in allowing us to change our expedition plans at such short notice.'

Team Deptherapy was hosted by the True Blue Bay Boutique Resort with diving facilitated by Aquanauts Dive Centre. Several RAID training courses were conducted by the group and two days were spent conduction a reef survey, led by Deptherapy ambassador and beneficiary Tom Oates, now in his second year of studying for a degree in Marine Biology at Hull University. The data recorded will be incorporated into larger studies being conducted in the UK.

Grenada is home to a unique array of reefs, marine life and shipwrecks, making it a sought after dive and snorkelling location for visitors from all over the world. As part of the expedition, Deptherapy were met by Petra Roach, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority and the Minister of Tourism for Grenada, Clarice Modeste- Curwen, who presented them with a memorable keepsake book named ‘Grenada Heritage’.

'Integrity, courage and service are all words that we associate with our veterans – they deserve our gratitude because of their selflessness and bravery and so we are honoured that Deptherapy chose us to be the destination for this very important work,' said Ms Roach. 'We welcome and accommodate divers of all abilities and experience levels and thoroughly look forward to continuing to facilitate the extraordinary work done by Deptherapy on future expeditions to Grenada.'

Richard Cullen, CEO of Deptherapy, said, 'We came to Grenada for the great diving it offers. What we weren’t expecting was to meet the CEO of the Grenada Tourist Authority or to be honoured by a visit from the Minister of Tourism. These meetings built on the amazing warmth of welcome we received at the True Blue Bay Boutique Resort and Aquanauts Divers. We had an amazing expedition, we wanted for nothing and the diving was brilliant. From the bottom of our hearts thank you, you have helped to change our beneficiaries’ lives. We love you all, we love Grenada.'
