Wakatobi Dive Resort

Located on a small island in a remote corner of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Sea, Wakatobi Dive Resort combines the beauty of a pristine coral reef environment with the comforts of a luxury beachfront retreat. It is a socially and ecologically conscious property situated in an area widely regarded as one of the finest diving destinations in the world

The Resort

Wakatobi sits on an expansive stretch of white sand beach overlooking a protected coral reef. The resort’s buildings make use of native materials and traditional design to provide regional authenticity, while a modern infrastructure provides all the comforts one would expect of a top-rated resort. Four waterfront villas and 22 ocean and garden bungalows are spaced for privacy among lushly landscaped grounds. Each offers shaded porches for enjoying the sea breeze, spacious interiors and spa-style shower rooms.

All accommodations are within easy walking distance of the resort’s central facilities, which include an open-air dining pavilion with ocean views, and the central longhouse, which includes a lounge area, multi-media facilities and the dive centre. Housed in a separate building is the resort spa, which offers guests a wide range of treatments, including Balinese massage and hot stone treatments. Diving and snorkelling are primary activities, but the resort also hosts a range of beach and watersports, plus land-based activities such as cooking classes, nature walks and tours of local villages.

Though remote, Wakatobi is easily reached, as there are direct charter flights from Bali to a private airfield. The resort staff can provide concierge-level assistance with travel arrangements, including tours and hotel stays during layovers in Bali. Wakatobi operates on the principles of social and ecological consciousness. As such, a portion of all revenue is dedicated to the betterment of local people and the protection of an extensive section (20km) of surrounding reefs.

Diving Activity

Wakatobi Resort is situated in an area known as the Coral Triangle, which has the greatest bio-diversity of any tropical marine environment. One of the region's best dive sites lies just beyond the resort beach. Known as the House Reef, this three-mile-long swath of shallow sea bed and coral reef can be enjoyed at any time of the day and into the night, either from shore, the resort jetty or via taxi boats that shuttle divers and snorkellers to more distant sections of the reef and drop off.

The small islands and coral shoals that surround Wakatobi provide many more miles of underwater exploration, and there are more than 40 named dive sites served by the resort's fleet of custom-built dive boats. With structures at many of these sites beginning in depths of less than 4m, and plunging precipitously to depths below 40m, it is possible to execute multi-level dive profiles lasting 70 minutes or more. In-water dive guides are provided to assist in spotting the many small and unusual creatures found on these reefs. Wakatobi’s multilingual dive staff can accommodate guests of all skill levels and interests. Snorkellers are welcome to join divers at most all sites, instruction is offered from introductory programs to advanced training, and practices such as extended range and rebreather diving are fully supported. Private diving experience

A Wakatobi Private Dive Experience Manager offers the ultimate in underwater freedom and discovery.

This personalized guide service, tailored to your wishes, enhances the diving & snorkeling experience by providing deeper understanding of marine life behavior, assisting your underwater imaging, or guiding you through the unique experience of a fluo dive* (complementary for those taking at least four days with a Private Dive Experience Manager).

Fluo diving

There’s no place like Wakatobi to experience fluo diving. See the underwater world like never before on this guided private or semi-private diving experience. At night, special ultraviolet lighting causes fluorescent proteins in certain fish and corals to light up in glowing colors. Fluo-diving is a second to-none experience that will take your breath away, all the while revealing the underwater realm in a new and enthralling manner.*

* Fluo diving requires proficiency in night diving; if a guest’s night diving skills are lacking, we reserve the right to substitute this service.

Pelagian Dive Yacht

To provide guests with an ever wider range of diving adventures, the resort operates a 36m luxury dive yacht, the Pelagian, which cruises farther afield in the Wakatobi archipelago, and to the southern shore of Buton Island. This vessel carries a maximum of 10 guests in five spacious staterooms, each with private shower rooms. A pair of custom-built dive tenders give access to sites ranging from open-water sea mounts covered in colourful sea fans and schooling fish to sheltered bays where unusual creatures await to be discovered hiding in rubble fields (muck dives). A dedicated chef provides fine dining, and the staff handles all logistics of gear transfer. Photographers are provided with a separate, climate controlled workroom, and there are shaded and open decks for socializing or relaxing.

Making a Difference

Wakatobi has recently launched a head start program for turtle hatchlings. For the past couple years resort staff have continued to witness increasing numbers of adult turtles on the surrounding reefs, and particularly on the House Reef at Wakatobi. As such they’re finding more and more female sea turtles crawling up onto Wakatobi’s beach at night and laying eggs. So we put a head start programme into place and built a turtle nursery, which is managed by resort staff, to help give these tiny mariners a better chance at survival in wild. In addition to this new nursery, Wakatobi’s Collaborative Reef Conservation Program has made great strides in maintaining the healthy status of the surrounding reefs. This area, which stretches over 20km (12.5 mi) of reef and dozens of dive sites, was also designated a UNESCO Heritage Site in 2012. All these measures add up to a favourable environment for sea turtles to thrive.

By not only protecting active nesting sites, but also giving hatchlings a head start of life, Wakatobi's nursery program will allow both humans and sea turtles to coexist on the resort’s white sand beach, while also ensuring that future generations of turtles will survive to delight divers when they come together on the reefs.

The turtle nursery is now one of the highlights of the resort tour, which is offered to guests each week. Guests are also welcome to visit the nursery at any time on their own.
