Our Anniversary Issue Is Here

After four years of being published as a digital-only magazine, DIVE returns to the newsstand with a high-quality quarterly

Publisher's Letter

Twenty years ago next month the first edition of Dive International landed on newsstands. It contained a piece by the author Michael Crichton about diving with sharks. The equally famous Douglas Adams told us why he loved diving. There was a feature about that weird new phenomenon called the web and what it could do for divers. And lots of wonderful underwater photographs. There was also a publisher’s letter from me which noted that diving was booming with PADI certifying across the globe a new diver every 48 seconds. The letter ended with a declaration that Dive was the magazine diving deserved!

Over the years the magazine evolved. Writers and photographers came and went. Some are still producing stunning images and incisive commentary. Ideas ran their course and a few we still rely on today. We experimented. With hindsight some of the things we tried didn’t quite come off - a lot, flicking back through past issues, did.

We grew in size. We joined forces with the British Sub-Aqua Club and for a time DIVE was its official magazine. Times changed and what was once a curio – the web – came to dominate publishing and we decided to join the digital revolution and drop our print edition. Circulation exploded and today we have more than 50,000 subscribers spread around the world. Many more people regularly check our website on their mobile phones and follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

And the world keeps changing. Today after nearly a four-year break we have decided the time is right to return to print. We plan to produce quarterly the most beautiful diving magazine, on the very highest quality paper, to go alongside our monthly app. Our website has in the last few years been tuned to mobile digital delivery. We talk to our readers daily on social media and regularly send out newsletters via email.

But somethings don’t change. Diving is still as magical. The battle to conserve and protect our oceans is every bit as crucial as it was two decades ago. And divers still deserve the very best magazine to reflect their sport and share their passion.

This edition is to celebrate the fun and delight of publishing DIVE for the past 20 years. Our future editions plan to take diving magazines further than ever before. The highest grade paper, stunning reproduction, brimming with exciting features. A quality magazine like no other. We will also be utilising the best and most appropriate methods of delivery to bring you the most impressive, the most challenging, the most informative and the most awe-inspiring content digitally. Join us on the journey diving demands.
