Gili T Photo Report | Getting Aid to Lombok

lombok title

With a series of new earthquakes striking the region over the weekend, efforts to aid the islanders of Lombok, who suffered the worst of the damage, are continuing. Resident instructor and DIVE 's photographer Alfie Minnaar follows Freedive Gili's yoga teacher Liza Maria DeWinter on a journey through the villages of Lombok, bringing much needed supplies and medical attention to the locals who have lost so much

Lisa (facing camera) stocks up on supplies to distribute to Lombok's villagers. 'I tried to pick villages where people didn't go before,' she said. 'Even if their houses are still standing, their businesses have collapsed so they can't work any more. Even if the village still looks good, most of the time they didn't get any help, so I tried to go there to bring them food and water.' Liza's Indonesian boyfriend helped to identify the villages which so far hadn't received much help.

The team visited a total of 5 villages during the day, 2 of which Liza had previously visited. 'I bring my little box of food and I try to buy as much as possible but then you arrive in a village with 600 people, so then I go back another time,' she said. 'I went back [to one village] because they had a baby that was pooping blood and there was another man who jumped off the second floor but he had injured his foot and needed help.'

Noodles, rice and eggs are Indonesian staples. Nappies and sanitary towels are much needed by the women and children camped in shelters.

Martin and Lubika are junior doctors vacationing on Gili Trawangan but gave up their time to help. Here, with Liza, they counsel a family on how to look after their health during the rebuilding.

Despite all the trauma, the much needed aid brings smiles to people's faces. 'I saw a lot of smiley faces,' said Liza, 'and people really appreciate what you do even if you don't have much'
