Reports have begun to slowly emerge after a liveaboard operating in the Egyptian Red sea caught fire last week, resulting in the death of one of the divers on board. The tragedy took place on the last night of the trip, with the vessel moored not far from the port town of Marsa Alam.

A week after the event, details remain scarce, however, it has been reported that the M/Y Suzanna, operating as the Red Sea Aggressor 1 on a Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone itinerary, caught fire at around midnight on Thursday, 31 October. Eighteen passengers, hailing from a variety of countries, plus the 12 Egyptian crew members, were rescued after jumping overboard by a nearby liveaboard belonging to Emperor Fleet.

An American woman is confirmed as having died during the blaze, although no official reason has been given into the cause of her death. Initial reports in the media alleged that she had attempted to return to her cabin to collect a laptop, however, posts on Internet forum Scubaboard written by witnesses to the tragedy state that this was not the case.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. A report in the Hurgadians News online journal states that nine members of the crew have been arrested by Egyptian authorities on suspicion of negligence.
